Its quite hard to believe that this time last year I hadn’t even tasted proper sushi. There’s no way that I’d call myself knowledgeable, but what I can be sure of is that now I bloody LOVE it! It all started with a trip to Morocco (ok not Tokyo but you know!) Where I sampled an incredible array of sushi’s which tasted even better than you’d imagine mainly because they were displayed on a crazy wooden bridge…
Two days later and most definitely hooked, I cheekily invited myself to watch the sushi chef at the Sofitel hotel where we stayed to show me show he made it. It was a revelation! Rolling up rice with cling film covered bamboo mats? Who knew!
Sushi Making Tips
I never got to give it a go myself until Sumosan invited me to a little masterclass with their head sushi chef who flew over from Russia for evening! I learned that the best salmon for Sashimi is sourced super fresh and daily from Russia and that when moulding your sticky rice, you should handle it as little as possible, wetting your fingers to prevent pulling it apart. It was all a little fiddly, particularly when you flip over the seaweed sheets and then have to squash them into a tight roll with intent.
I like to think I was pretty good… Hey, it tasted amazing, particularly when paired with the finest sakes! – Have you ever given making sushi a go?
