To Biba and Beyond!
If you remember my recent Brighton based post (where I wore a very 90’s child outfit!) I had promised that I’d tell you all about the reason I was there in the first place – to see the Biba and Beyond exhibition at the Brighton Museum and Art Gallery. Well, me and my blogging besties did fiiinally get to the exhibition (after a fat dose of photo-taking and chip consumption-based procrastination) and we really enjoyed it! Hyped by everyone around the web, I was really looking forward to seeing more about the dream, legendary shop which shaped the way we shop today. Plus I was keen to refresh my knowledge of founder Barbara Hulanicki’s life after having read her autobiography a few years back. BTW, Babs is incred. Loosing family members as a child and constantly travelling, Barbara managed to pioneer an enormously successful enterprise despite her punishing early life. Inspirational lady, especially considering that since the Biba boom, she switched her creative mind to interior design, lending her natural flair for fabulous design to some of Americas top hotels and the like. You can watch her in video talking about returning to Brighton for the show here. The exhib is actually fairly small but I like that because otherwise get caught up for hours stressing that I’ll never get out while my belly rumbles. I think the girls will all agree that the best part of this though was the children’s section at the end! A place where you can rest your feet and illustrate your outfit was a very good idea indeed! (well, you were supposed to design your own Biba style look but hey, we drew ourselves!)
I believe this is the only Biba make up still in existence! Doesn’t it still look so modern?
