My Rustic French Life

>

How we live now…

Welcome back to La Manche in North West France to where my family farm stands strong in the valley secretly crying out for some TLC from its somewhat cash-strapped Mummy and Daddy! Even though it hurts a bit to see it in the state it’s in (half renovated), I equally don’t really want it to change from the big, cold but fun spaces it provided me with as a child. As I said in my last post about the garden, I’ve never felt the need to post these very personal views into a life that no one but my family knows about. But now, I think it makes for some fun and insightful images and text so enjoy!

This is how me and my Mum, Dad and Brother live when we visit. We cook, eat and wash in this part of the old stable and sleep in a caravan in one of the barns. There’s no running water, apart from the outside pump and no electricity or toilets so we go outside and heat washing water in caudrons outside, so when I put rustic in the title – I mean ruuuusticc!

My Grandparents House…

Of course there’s garlic! haha.. These are the out-houses that belong to my Grandparents in their little house in the next village. They used to live off the farm but now just breed chicken, rabbits and sheep and grow veg at their home. They used these buildings to dry corn, pea pods, cook on an old aga, dry washing and store bits of fences etc.

How we’re making the farm better!..
We’re keeping a lot the same such as the lilly pond (with lots of French Frogs!) but we’ve added little extensions, taken out old flooring and allowed the roof space to be used for bedrooms with cute Dorma windows. Of course we’re also adding technology! Hopefully that will all last this old place for another few hundred years!
